CLASSICAL, JAZZ, AMERICAN FOLK CELLIST
As a performer:
Originally from Seoul, Korea. Received numerous awards from national classical music competition at young age. Choi holds dual Master degrees in Classical and Jazz Performance’s from the University of South Florida. As a multifaceted instrumentalist and composer Choi has built her career through extensive worldwide touring. Performing primarily as a world renowned cellist, her proficiencies extend to performances as a pianist, violinist, bassist, and composer. Served as the principal cellist of Henry Mancini Institute, offered a full scholarship for doctoral program candidate from University of Miami, selected as USC Principal scholarship and Roe Excellence Cellist Scholarship.
After moving to NYC, she played with Organic Orchestra, New York Jazz Symphony Orchestra, toured with David Binney Ensemble, performed with Christian Howes, Billy Contreras and among others. Her Jazz/Classical string quartet played at Fat Cat in Greenwich Village for over 5 years as a house string quartet, created a Rhythm ‘n things and Asian and jazz fusion band “Jayu”(freedom in Korean) and received “an emerging artist award on 2008 “ from Queens Council on the arts”.
Now she founded “Beacon Chamber Ensemble” and is hosting monthly reading sessions and holds multiple public concerts. She is residing in Beacon (Hudson Valley, NY) with two beautiful boys and wonderful husband and looking forward to sharing her love for music and passion for teaching young children and creating more music!
As an educator:
She teaches at Bard College and Dutchess Community College as well as at her home. From teaching private in-home lessons to creating an after-school music center, Choi has built an incredible community of students, teachers and connections in the NYC area and Beacon ( upstate NY) called Queens Music Academy.
Apart from raising a family, Choi’s vision and passion for teaching music is priority. As a passionate visionary, Choi wants nothing more than to see her students progress and develop an appreciation and passion for music.
“Every student is unique and has specific goals and learning needs. I take that into account and create customized lessons just for you based on what you want to learn. Using a personalized curriculum, I strive to provide a well-rounded experience that is fun, engaging and student-centered. I’ve been teaching music for almost two decades, whether in the band classroom or my private lessons studio. I’ve learned that creating connections with music study and the student interests takes our music learning to the next level. I can’t wait to begin!”

Jayu EP (2008)
Project “Jayu” meaning “Freedom” in Korea was created was born in 2008. Originally Violin, Cello and Piano trio and drum was added for NYC tour series. Members include Chern Hwei Fung, Mark Chung, Francesca Han and Choi Fairbanlks. This group was one of the Queens Council on the Art Emerging Artist Award in 2008.
